How do I get rid of the combination lock?
I just moved into a new house and my office, there is a Master Lock combination lock that is attached to this plateau. There is no way to take the tray out to get the lock off so I have how to get the same lock off. Is it possible that I can have a combination of somewhere? Or is there a way I might take it with some sort of tool inexpensive. I do not want to cut it if I do not have to do. Suggestions?
This type of lock is usually a spring mechanism lock. These can often be overcome by applying an upward pressure on the shackle, using a pair of large screwdriver wedged between the lock and the shackle, then striking the side of the lock with a strong ballpeen hammer. Experiment with variations of pressure increase between light and heavy repeatadly while striking the side of the lock. The idea is to give enough impetus momemtarily to release the spring-rise catch while simultaneously pulling the shackle upward. Too much pressure and latches place does not move, the pressure too little and you pull on the shackle rising fast enough before the return of spring the lock in the locked position. It is a delicate operation that does not always work with all locks, and can not work at all without a lot of practice to get the "feel" of it just right. But if you get the lock open, do not damage the lock and you can try different combinations in your spare time until you find one that works. Voila! You would then have a lock you ten dollars for "free". Personally, I would opt for bolt cutters, which are always a nice tool to have around home.
